The St@ndbyMe project addresses the challenges of digital transformation and social inclusion, particularly for older adults. While digitalisation is promoted as a solution for efficiency and accessibility, it risks deepening social inequalities, especially for digitally disadvantaged groups such as older individuals, migrants, low-income populations, and people with disabilities.
The shift to digital-first services—from banking to public services—assumes universal digital proficiency, overlooking those who struggle with technology. The lack of legal protection for digital rights (e.g., access to the internet and digital literacy education) exacerbates exclusion. Additionally, new challenges such as fake news, digital fraud, and data privacy demand high digital proficiency, further marginalising vulnerable groups.
The project emphasises a rights-based approach, advocating for professionals in care and adult education to recognise digital exclusion as a social issue, not an individual’s failure. Educators and caregivers play a crucial role in supporting older adults in navigating the digital world. By raising awareness and promoting digital literacy, the initiative aims to foster inclusive digital environments and challenge the growing digital divide.
